Andrew | Relationship Counsellor

Introduction

I am an experienced relationship counsellor with a warm and non-judgemental approach. If you're struggling with a problem or want to get more out of your relationship, counselling may help. I'll work sensitively and honestly with you to support you in what you're going through.

I offer short-term counselling for specific problems or long-term open-ended therapy to explore deeper issues. I work with adults and young people (16+) in couples counselling and individual counselling.

I welcome in-person clients from Torbay and south Devon, and from anywhere in the world online!

Couples counselling

Couples counselling can help you develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics in your relationship, find ways of sorting out relationship issues and improve communication. I am equally comfortable counselling same-sex couples as heterosexual couples.

I have experience working with a wide range of relationship issues, including:

  • Anger, control and hostility
  • Affairs and infidelity
  • Communication
  • Commitment
  • Emotional abuse/manipulation and gaslighting
  • Intra-cultural relationships
  • Jealousy and insecurity
  • Long-distance relationships (eg living in different countries)
  • Parenting, including blended families
  • Potential breakdown of relationship
  • Separation and divorce
  • Sex and intimacy
  • Trust

Client feedback

“We are glad we chose Andrew to help us with our issues. We feel he listened and empathised with our situation, whilst giving us helpful practical advice and coping mechanisms. Andrew tailored the sessions focusing on what we wanted and showed genuine interest and no judgement for our challenges. We appreciate the help and encouragement he provided.”    R+J

“We are super glad that we chose Andrew as our counsellor. He was able to understand what we needed assistance with and had a non-judgmental approach. With Andrew’s guidance, we learned how to communicate with one another in a more effective way which deepened our connection. We are grateful for Andrew and would highly recommend him!”   Ashley & Andy

About me

I am a gay man living in a long-term intercultural relationship with my Polish partner.

I was adopted as a very young baby, grew up feeling I had to hide my sexuality, and by my late teens had developed an eating disorder.

While living in New York in my late 20s, I got into therapy to help me deal with not only my eating and body image but also abandonment, attachment, identity and intimacy issues. I also started working a 12-step programme for compulsive eating and was introduced to Buddhist meditation. This led to me returning to the UK to trace my birth family, with whom I now have a very good relationship.

Having benefited immensely myself from therapy, in my early 30s I trained in London as a psychotherapeutic counsellor and worked in private practice in London for ten years before moving to Brighton.

In parallel with my counselling and coaching career, I’ve also had considerable professional experience in PR, corporate communications and learning & development. When I lived in Brighton, I ran my own PR business and later became programme director for the Brighton & Hove branch of international leadership development charity Common Purpose. Most recently I spent four years as part-time communications manager with the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust in Exeter.

Voluntary work has included: “befriending” asylum seekers in a London refugee centre; being a trustee of Mankind UK, a national charity offering therapy and other support to male survivors of sexual abuse; and for the past eight years I have been a trustee of Gaia House, a retreat centre near Newton Abbot offering silent meditation retreats in the Buddhist tradition.

Online therapy

I offer online counselling sessions over Zoom.

Online counselling is ideal for anyone whose health is particularly vulnerable or who for any other reason is concerned about social mixing.

For face-to-face clients in Torquay

I offer face-to-face couples sessions in Torquay. Our young Jack Russell called “Toby” is super-friendly and (mostly!) very well behaved. He prefers not to be left in the house while I’m working in the annexe, so often sits in on sessions – but only with your prior agreement, of course!
