Emma | Interpersonal/Relationship Therapist & RMN
Relationship Therapy Nottingham
I’m Emma, a dedicated and compassionate Interpersonal Psychotherapist based in Nottingham. With over 20 years of experience both in the NHS and private practice. I hold a passion for understanding the complexities of human relationships.
I specialise in helping couples improve communication, rebuild trust, and navigate challenges together. I offer a supportive space to explore patterns, strengthen connection, and manage conflict more effectively. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and focused on helping you feel heard, understood, and closer as a couple.
I believe that, when they go wrong, relationships can be extremely damaging to our mental health. I have the qualification, knowledge, experience and skill to help people resolve these kinds of problems.
Whether you’re navigating life’s challenges or seeking clarity in your relationships, I’m here to guide you towards a more fulfilling and authentic life. IPT and the Development model allows us to explore the roles we play in life and the changes we experience—whether that’s moving from married to divorced, becoming a parent, or facing a loss—and how these transitions shape our identities. I also draw on Attachment Theory, which helps us understand the deeper emotional patterns in our relationships and teaches us how to communicate more effectively.

Specialisations and Expertises
While I tailor each session to suit the unique needs of the couple, many clients begin to notice meaningful shifts within 6 to 12 sessions. The length of therapy often depends on the nature of the issues and the goals you bring. Some couples choose a short-term, solution-focused approach, while others value ongoing support to strengthen emotional connection and embed lasting changes in how they relate to one another.I offer a welcoming, neurodiversity-affirming and LGBTQ+ friendly space where all identities and ways of experiencing the world are respected. My approach is compassionate, non-judgemental, and tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual and couple I work with.
Most common issues I support people with:
1. Communication Breakdown
Many couples come to therapy feeling stuck in negative cycles — talking over each other, avoiding difficult conversations, or misunderstanding each other’s intentions. I help couples slow things down, express themselves clearly, and really hear one another, creating space for more respectful and meaningful dialogue.
2. Loss of Connection or Intimacy
Over time, emotional or physical closeness can fade. Whether due to life stress, parenting, or drifting apart, I support couples in exploring what’s missing and how to reconnect. Together, we work on rebuilding intimacy, increasing shared understanding, and bringing warmth back into the relationship.
3. Conflict and Repeated Arguments
Recurring disagreements can feel exhausting and hurtful. In therapy, I help couples understand the roots of their conflict, identify unhelpful patterns, and develop healthier ways to manage disagreements — reducing blame and increasing empathy.
4. Trust Issues and Betrayal
Whether from infidelity, secrecy, or past wounds, trust can be deeply shaken. I offer a structured, supportive space to process what’s happened, explore the impact, and begin the complex work of repair — if both partners are willing to engage.
5. Life Transitions and Relationship Strain
Big changes — like becoming parents, blending families, job loss, or illness — can put pressure on any relationship. I help couples navigate these transitions with greater resilience by strengthening their connection, clarifying roles, and supporting emotional adjustment.
