Deborah | Couples and Relationship Counsellor

Relationship Counselling Orpington

As a qualified couples and relationship therapist, I offer counselling sessions to couples in-person at my private practice in Orpington, or online nationwide.

Relationships can be both deeply fulfilling and incredibly challenging. When communication breaks down, connection suffers, and both partners can feel unheard, misunderstood, or stuck in cycles of blame and frustration. When working with couples, I use a number of techniques, including Imago Relationship Therapy, a powerful and structured approach that helps partners move beyond conflict and rediscover connection.

The Imago dialogue is a structured, respectful conversation that allows each partner to speak and be truly heard, without judgment, blame or interruption. This fosters empathy, clarity, and emotional safety, helping couples to slow down reactive communication and begin to understand each other’s inner world.

Many of the struggles couples face stem from unconscious needs and expectations we bring into relationships, often shaped by early life experiences. When these needs go unmet, they can surface as conflict or disconnection. This shows up in many ways, such as mistrust, misunderstandings, arguments or betrayals. In therapy, I help couples explore these patterns with compassion and curiosity, creating new insight into themselves and each other so both partners feel supported and empowered to grow together.

Sometimes couples decide to end their relationship, and therapy can help you move towards your new lives apart with compassion and understanding.

We begin with an initial commitment of six sessions. This provides a strong foundation for understanding your relationship dynamic and practicing new communication tools. From there, therapy may continue for up to 12 sessions or more, depending on your unique goals and progress.

If you would like to know more or book an appointment, please send me a message via the send a message - button.

Online therapy

If you are looking to have couples counselling online, I offer a number of mediums depending on what works for you. Sometimes couples will be in the same room together, sharing a device and screen. At other times, they might be in different locations.

Online counselling requires privacy. If you and your partner decide this is the best way for you, then you will both need to ensure you have a completely private space where you will not be interrupted or overheard. You will both be expected to have your screens turned on.

You will both be sent a link to the platform and I will start the session once you are both in the virtual waiting room.

Specialisations and Expertises

Relationship & Couple's Therapy - romantic, family, workplace, friendships. I use the Imago Relationship Therapy Dialogue to improve communication and deepen connection in relationships. Exploring what we look for in our relationships and understanding our unmet needs can help to reduce blame and increase empathy.

Loss and Bereavement
 - death of someone close or a beloved pet. Sometimes the loss of someone we didn't know that well (eg. a celebrity or an estranged friend or relative) can leave feelings that are hard to make sense of. An unexpected or unwanted change in lifestyle, health, finances, etc can result in a loss of identity or sense of self. Sometimes a 'happy event' can bring changes that bring mixed feelings, made even harder when others don't understand.

Anxiety and/ or Depression - often the two go hand in hand when not addressed. Together we can explore the deeper feelings and help find relief.

Self-confidence - feelings of never 'good enough' can stop us from fulfilling our potential, lead to procrastination and indecision.

Most common issues I support people with:

Communication

Unmet Needs

Lack of trust

Life Changes

Loss and Grief
