Couples therapy Alton
I am a neurodivergent (AuDHD) therapist who was late diagnosed. This has given me lived experience of living in a world that doesn't always fit how I think, feel and process, and of learning how to drop my masks and bring my authentic self.
I have always been interested in people, what makes them tick, and looking at our differences. Having been brought up in a very judgemental household, I learned very early in life to accept others for who they are and to embrace all our quirks.
I often stand out as being different from others, and learning about my neurodiversity brought me so much understanding and acceptance of myself. Supporting others to understand and accept themselves is such a wonderful part of my work as a counsellor, and I feel very privileged to be in a position to offer this.
Most of my clients are neurodivergent and looking to work out how to adjust to this, or to see what changes can be made in order for life and the world to be a happier, safer feeling place. Whether you are diagnosed, awating assessment or early in your journey of discovery, I am here to support you in this. Within my couples work, sometimes both partners are neurodivergent, or it might be just one of you.
We will work together to find out which are your most difficult areas of life, and see what strategies might be of help. Together we can look at what difficulties you are facing, and how you might be able to communicate this to each other. Couples come to therapy for many reasons, and with the hope of various outcomes.
I offer a very human approach, and will sometimes draw on my own experiences to help you understand your own. It is my belief that the therapy process works much better when we can both be human together.
I offer a free initial conversation to give you a chance to decide if I might be the right therapist for you. You are under no obligation following this, and I encourage you to "interview" as many therapists as you need to until you find the right one for you.

Specialisations and Expertises
Being neurodivergent myself, this is the core of my work. I feel that being neurodivergent allows me to communicate and work more efectively with others who are also neurodivergent.I do not try to estimate how many sessions will be needed, and this is very much decided by you. It is common for other difficulties to become apparent once the work has started, then it will be for you to choose if you want to dig into these or not. I will follow your lead in sessions, and we will check in from time to time to ensure you are still benefitting from therapy.
Most common issues I support people with:
Communication is often the top of the list when working with couples. We will look at areas where communication could be more open, sometimes more direct to minimise misunderstandings, and we will work together to translate this where needed.Personal needs, both for the individuals and as a couple, are often not recognised, and therfore can go unmet. It can feel hard at times to ask for this, or to be able to negotiate, rather than sacrifice.
Wants and goals are often unspoken, or there can be differences which need to be spoken about. It can help to have a third, unbiased person to help navigate these, and to find a way to move forward.
Understanding each other, especially when neurodivergency is involved, can feel difficult. It can sometimes be difficult to understand your own feelings about something, so working together to bring greater clarity can be so important.
Where you want the relationship to go is an important question that deserves consideration. A difficulty of couples therapy is that is not always about how to stay together. Sometimes it is around how to separate in as healthy a way as possible. This question is not always answered in the first session, and can be something that arises later in the work.
