Wendy | Couples Therapist

Couples therapy Stockton on Tees

I work with couples to repair trust, improve communication, and strengthen their emotional intimacy with each other. It takes courage to seek out a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. Here’s how I can support you:

  • Improved Communication I can help you both express feelings and thoughts more openly and respectfully.

  • Conflict Resolution Skills You’ll learn how to navigate disagreements without escalating into fights or shutting down.

  • Understanding Patterns Therapy can uncover unhealthy patterns and triggers that keep causing issues.

  • Rebuilding Trust If trust has been damaged (e.g., by lies, betrayal, or neglect), therapy offers a space to repair it safely.

  • Emotional Support You both get an impartial third party to help validate experiences and mediate tensions.

  • Strengthening Connection, I often give exercises to rekindle emotional and physical intimacy.

Who Should Consider Couples Therapy?
It’s for all couples of all ages and at all stages of their relationship not just for those in crisis. Therapy for couples can resolve a current problem, prevent problems from worsening, or provide a “check-up” for a happy couple experiencing a period of transition or increased stress.

Common issues addressed in couples therapy include:
Money, parenting, sex, affairs, family and friends, chronic illness, conflict, communication breakdown.

What happens in a couple’s therapy session?
The therapist looks at each person and how their role in the relationship, difficulties, need and wants affects each other and the couple. A therapist is always a neutral party.

Couples therapy can be a powerful way to change the course of your relationship so both partners can be happier in the relationship.

What problems can couples therapy help with?
Couples bring a wide range of issues to counselling, from lack of intimacy and communication breakdown to trust, jealousy and infidelity issues. Family conflicts and difficult life transitions can cause problems within a relationship, as can work-related stress or financial problems.

What couples therapy can't do:
Counselling isn’t a magic bullet that will solve a couple’s relationship problems. Counselling can help you understand yourself and others better, and offer tools and guidance, but it can’t change a person or a relationship if people aren’t ready to put in the effort and commitment.

A therapist can guide and help you, but it’s the couple who must do the hard work. For some couples, the safest and healthiest option may be for them to separate. And couples counselling can be an important part of the process.

I feel I specialise in helping people move forward, set goals, challenge themselves and become more self-aware of who they are. We'll go at your pace and focus on what feels most meaningful for your goals and growth.

Online therapy

Online video therapy sessions are virtual counseling sessions conducted via secure video conferencing platforms, allowing clients and therapists to meet remotely;

  • This enables scheduling sessions to fit work, family, or other commitments, often outside of traditional office hours.

  • Sessions take place in a familiar, comfortable environment, such as one's own home, which can make it easier to open up.

  • Eliminates distance barriers, allowing access to therapists regardless of location

Online counseling offers benefits like increased accessibility, providing mental health support to those in remote areas or with mobility issues, and flexibility, allowing sessions to fit around busy schedules. It also promotes comfort and privacy by enabling people to access help from their own homes, reducing travel time and associated costs.

I use Microsoft teams or google meet for all my online work, once a session is booked in a link will be sent to access the session.

Specialisations and Expertises

I feel i specialise in the following areas;

Communication problems in a relationship:

Couples therapy can be highly effective for improving communication by providing a safe, structured space for both partners to express themselves openly and learn healthier ways of interacting. Here’s how it can help:

  • Identifying Unhealthy Patterns I can help couples recognise negative communication habits—like criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling, or passive-aggressiveness—that may be damaging the relationship.

  • Teaching Communication Skills I can teach practical tools such as active listening, using “I” statements instead of blame, and validating each other’s feelings.

  • Addressing Underlying Issues Often, communication problems stem from deeper issues like trust, unmet needs, or unresolved past hurts. Therapy helps bring those to light.

  • Building Empathy and Understanding Therapy can try to encourage partners to see things from each other’s perspective, which can improve emotional intimacy and reduce misunderstandings.

After infidelity:

Creating a Safe Space I ensure conversations happen in a structured, respectful environment—where raw emotions can be expressed without turning into chaos or blame;

  • Understanding What Happened Therapy helps explore: Why the infidelity occurred (not as an excuse, but for clarity). What vulnerabilities or unmet needs may have existed. How each partner contributed to the state of the relationship before the betrayal.

  • Rebuilding Trust (If Both Partners Want That) Trust doesn’t return quickly—but therapy gives you: Tools for accountability (e.g., transparency, checking in). Boundaries and expectations moving forward.

  • Strategies for rebuilding emotional intimacy slowly.

  • Processing Emotions Betrayed partners often feel rage, grief, confusion, and shame. The unfaithful partner may feel guilt or defensiveness.I help both of you process those feelings safely.

  • Deciding What’s Next Not all couples stay together after infidelity, therapy can help you decide:

* Is reconciliation possible?

* What would healing look like?

* Or, is it healthier to part ways?

Separation or divorce:

Couples who are considering divorce or separation may seek out therapy as it can help provide clarity, guidance, and emotional support during a very difficult time.

  • Clarifying Intentions  I let both partners explore whether they truly want to end the relationship or if they’re seeking change.

  • Providing a Safe Space for Dialogue Communication can break down, I can offer a neutral environment to discuss painful topics calmly and constructively.

  • Exploring Underlying Issues Sometimes the desire to separate stems from unresolved problems like resentment, unmet needs, or emotional disconnection. I can help unpack these issues and evaluate if they can be worked through.

  • Facilitating Reconnection (if desired) If there’s a desire to repair the relationship, I can guide couples through rebuilding trust, intimacy, and communication.

  • Assisting with Peaceful Separation  If the decision is to separate or divorce, I can support the couple in doing so respectfully and collaboratively, especially important if children are involved.

It is imortant to remember every couple is different and many things are woven into the relationship problems, it is very rarely just one thing.

Sessions are led by the clients and are held weekly, fortnightly no set amount as each couple is invidual.

Most common issues I support people with:

  • repair trust,
  • improve communication
  • strengthen their emotional intimacy with each other
  • infidelity
  • divorce/separation
