Introduction
Most of the couples I see aren't here because something dramatic has happened. They're here because something quietly has. The arguments have started looping. The conversations have got shorter. The sex has thinned out, or stopped. They're functioning as a household, as parents, as colleagues running the family logistics, but something that used to be between them has gone missing, and they don't quite know how to get it back.
Sometimes it's louder than that. An affair has surfaced and you're both in the wreckage trying to work out whether, and how, to rebuild. A betrayal you've been carrying alone has finally come out. A version of one or both of you has changed in a way the relationship hasn't caught up with.
What I do
I use Imago Relationship Therapy, an approach designed specifically for long-term relationships. It's structured but human, with techniques I guide you through in the room, not the endless free-flowing argument that just replays what you do at home. What Imago does well is help couples slow down and feel safe enough to actually hear each other.
Most long-term relationship conflict isn't really about the surface issue. It's about the unmet need underneath, and the older wound that need is sitting on top of. Imago gives us a way to surface that gently, without one of you becoming the villain.
What sessions are like
Couples sessions are 60 or 90 minutes (£75/£105) in a comfortable, non-clinical room in Nantwich. Our first session is about me hearing from each of you, what's brought you, what you're hoping for, and how you're each experiencing the relationship right now.
I won't take sides. I won't tell you whether to stay or go. And I'll be honest with you both, kindly, about what I'm seeing.
A note on timing
Most couples wait far too long to come, not because they don't care, but because saying it out loud, to each other, in front of someone else, makes it real. There's a quiet fear that naming the truth might be the thing that ends it. In my experience, it's usually the opposite. The things left unsaid do more damage than the things finally spoken.
If you and your partner want to try a different conversation, I'd be glad to hear from you.

Specialisation
I specialise in couples therapy using Imago Relationship Therapy, an approach designed specifically for long-term partnerships that have drifted or stalled. Most of the couples I work with fall into one of these categories: those who've lost the spark and sense of connection over time, those navigating a significant life transition together (parenthood, career change, bereavement), those stuck in repetitive conflict patterns, and those rebuilding trust after infidelity or betrayal.
The issues I see most often are disconnection and lost intimacy, communication breakdown, the same argument on a loop, and the creeping distance that comes from years of managing logistics instead of knowing each other. Infidelity and trust rebuilding are also a significant part of my work; couples often wait until they're in crisis before coming, but some do reach out when they first sense something's shifting.
What to expect in terms of sessions
This varies considerably. Some couples come for a focused piece of work over 8 to 12 sessions, particularly when addressing a specific issue or pattern. Others stay longer, especially when working through infidelity or significant rebuilding. A few couples continue with ongoing maintenance sessions once a month or quarterly, to keep the connection tended.
I don't prescribe a number at the outset. We'll talk about what feels right as we go, and I'm honest about whether I think we're moving at a pace that's working. The work sometimes happens quickly once you both understand what's actually going on underneath. Sometimes it takes longer because there are deeper patterns to untangle.
Most couples know within the first 3 to 4 sessions whether this feels like the right approach and whether they want to continue.
Most common issues I support people with:
Disconnection & Lost Intimacy
You love each other but the warmth has faded. You function well together, you co-parent, you manage the household, you're a team on logistics, but somewhere along the way, the tenderness went missing. Sex has thinned out or stopped. The conversations have got shorter. You're more like flatmates running a household than partners. This is the most common reason couples come, and it's rarely about not caring. It's about having lost touch with each other under the weight of ordinary life.
The Looping Argument
You're stuck in the same fight, recycled endlessly. It might be about money, sex, the in-laws, the household division, parenting, but you both sense you're not really fighting about that. You're fighting about the same underlying wound in a hundred different costumes, and neither of you knows how to get off the loop. Imago is particularly effective here because it helps you see what's actually being triggered underneath the surface row.
Infidelity & Betrayal
One of you has had an affair, or a betrayal has come to light. One of you is trying to understand what happened and why. The other is trying to work out whether to stay, whether to forgive, whether it's even possible to rebuild trust. You're both in wreckage and you need a steady, non-judgmental space to do that work. Recovery from infidelity isn't about pretending it didn't happen, it's about understanding what it meant and whether you both want to rebuild.
Life Changes & Transition Shock
A significant change has moved one or both of you, a career shift, parenthood, a bereavement, one partner starting therapy, midlife questions arriving, and the relationship is creaking as it tries to keep up. You've changed but your partner hasn't, or you've both changed in different directions. The relationship infrastructure that worked for the version of you that existed five years ago doesn't fit anymore, and you need to renegotiate who you are together now.
Communication Breakdown
You have fundamentally different communication styles and it's creating an impasse. One of you wants to talk things through; the other shuts down or walks away. One of you raises concerns; the other minimises or dismisses them. You both end up feeling unheard, defensive, or unseen. This often shows up alongside other issues, but it's the thing that prevents you from actually solving anything together. Learning to hear each other, which is what Imago teaches, can unlock everything else.
Areas of counselling I can help with
Fees
Our first session is 60 minutes, £75. This is a chance for me to hear from both of you about what's brought you, what you're hoping for, and how you're each experiencing the relationship. It gives us all a sense of whether this feels like the right fit and how you'd like to work together.
After that, sessions are flexible depending on what you need. Some couples do well with 60-minute sessions (£75), particularly early on when you're establishing patterns and learning the Imago techniques. Others find that 90 minutes (£105) works better, especially when you're doing deeper work around infidelity or significant transitions, or when you need more breathing room to actually move through something rather than just starting it.
How often you come depends on what feels right for you both. Most couples start weekly, which tends to build momentum and keep the work fresh. Others prefer fortnightly sessions, which can work well once you've got into the rhythm of the work, or if that's what fits your life and budget better. We'll talk about what makes sense for you.
I'm happy to discuss fees and payment methods when you get in touch. If cost is a concern, I'd rather you came and we talked about it than not reach out at all.
