Relationship Counselling Thame

Hello, my name is Valerie and I’m fully qualified and experienced Couples Counsellor. I have a ‘Specialist Diploma in Relationship Counselling’ and I am accredited by the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy). I am passionate about helping couples build stronger, healthier and sustainable relationships.

My approach to couples’ therapy, is open-minded, practical and step-by-step. I will ask you both what you would like to achieve out of the therapy; whether you would like to make your relationship work better, or whether you would like help to separate more amicably.  Perhaps you are not sure of the outcome you would like right now, that’s okay, we will work together to help you find clarity. Whatever your goal, I will tailor the sessions for your unique situation.

Together we will work to identify any unhelpful patterns of behaviour or communication that might have built up over time. You will both be given the opportunity to talk about how you feel, what is not working for you and alongside listening, to try to understand each other’s point of view.

We will work together to build a stronger and happier connection between you. Learning to express our feelings in a healthy way to connect with each other more deeply, finding better ways to communicate and feel happier together.

Please rest assured, I will not judge, make choices for you or attribute blame to either of one of you. It will be a safe, confidential space for meaningful discussions and exploration. Hopefully, this will enable you both to move forward more positively in whichever way you choose

Online therapy

Zoom is a safe and secure platform that I use.

Couples therapy online offers a range of benefits that can enhance the counseling experience. It provides convenience, eliminating the need for travel and allowing sessions from the comfort of your own home.

It offers flexibility in scheduling, making it easier to find time for therapy amidst busy lives.
Participating from a familiar environment can promote more open and honest discussions.

Online therapy ensures consistent access to counselling, even during challenging times, and offers an added level of privacy and anonymity for those who value it. Overall, online therapy can be a valuable and effective means for couples to work on their relationship.

Specialisations

  • I will help bring you closer through making your emotional connections stronger, so you feel safe and secure in your relationship.

  • Together, we will discover how to communicate more effective. So, you will be able to express any issues clearly and kindly, leading to a better understanding of each other.

  • I will help you deal with disagreements in a healthier way, therefore arguments will be less intense and happen less often.

  • We will explore how any unhelpful patterns of behaviour/communication might be negatively impacting your relationship

  • I will provide a space where your feelings are acknowledged and validated so you both feel understood and valued

Most common issues I support people with:

  1. Communication Problems: Difficulty in effective communication, including frequent misunderstandings, conflicts, and poor listening skills, is a common reason couples seek therapy.

  2. Trust and Infidelity: Rebuilding trust after infidelity or addressing trust issues within the relationship is a frequent focus of couples therapy.

  3. Financial Strain: Money-related conflicts and financial stress can take a toll on relationships, leading couples to seek therapy to address these issues.

  4. Parenting and Family Conflicts: Disagreements over parenting styles, conflicts with in-laws, or other family-related issues can strain a relationship, prompting couples to seek professional guidance.

These issues are common, and couples therapy can provide a structured and supportive environment to address and resolve them.

We are just happier now

We are just happier now. We were being so horrible and disrespectful, we have learnt to think about what is going on for ourselves and not blame each other for things. We can now stop a conversation if it starts to turn into an argument and come back to it, we just understand each other more now, its has been a great thing to do!

We are much happier

We have learnt that sharing how we are feeling in the moment instead of getting angry means our arguments no longer spiral out of control. Valerie has shown me, Phil, that my triggers are my responsibility nobody elses and I have to work out what they are. No more cutting atmosphere with a knife. We are much happier.

It was difficult but so worth it!

With Valerie's support we worked together to find that the real problem wasn't that weren't communicating but that we were not expressing our true feelings and needs. By looking at what was going on underneath our angry words into what was not being said (which took bravery) we are now more understanding of each other and have more connection.
It was difficult but so worth it!
